This is a positive, safe, inclusive, supportive space for, gender non-conforming, non-binary, transsexual, transgender, gender queer inter-sexed or questioning (or any variation there of under the rainbow spectrum) people living in or near Kelowna or the Okanagan are to discuss matters and various topics while providing and obtaining peer support.

Tuesday, August 11 – Voices Unheard, 7pm – 8pm, presented by Rebellious Unicorns, Unicorns Live, featuring James Sieben ~ Kelowna and Online

James Sieben (he/him/his) is a trans gay man. On this episode of Voices Unheard, James will talk with Jessica about how he has experienced misogyny first-hand before coming out, and how he actually now benefits from misogyny because he “passes for male”.

He’ll also discuss how he feels the recent rhetoric about trans people expressed by J.K. Rowling is harmful; the issue of anti-transness in sports; and why all cis LGBT2Q+ people should care about and fight for trans rights.

Do you like drawing and sketching? Do you appreciate the male form? Life Drawing with HIM offers a great opportunity to practice your artistic skills with a live male model. It is an informal drop-in session and social art group for men.

All skill levels welcome. This event is facilitated, but no formal instruction is offered. Bring your sketchbook and favourite drawing materials (no ink or paint please). Sessions start promptly, so please arrive on time.

TransParent provides community consultation, advising and advocacy on issues related to families of trans youth. They also operate a peer support network, monthly meetings, guest speakers and a lending library of books, videos and other resources.

Monday, August 3 – SA Pride Project: LGBTQ2S+ Terminology Workshop, 12:00 pm, hosted by Salmon Arm Arts Centre ~ Salmon Arm

Artists from the LGBTQ2S+ community are invited to contact Tracey at the Salmon Arm Arts Centre to learn more about creating artwork about terminology and its definitions. These works will become a part of the 3-Day PRIDE Art Exhibition at the Salmon Arm Art Gallery, happening Fall 2020.

Artists will receive a kit with take home instructions + access to a how to video. All materials and supplies will be provided.

Tuesday, August 4 – Voices Unheard, 7 pm – 8 pm, hosted by Rebellious Unicorns and Unicorns.live, featuring Toni Boot ~ Online

Toni Boot (she/her/hers), mayor of Summerland, BC since being elected in 2018, joins Jessica Samuels for Episode 4. Originally from Summerland, Mayor Boot has quite the professional resume: she taught at Okanagan College for several years, co-owned Kettle Valley Dried Fruit Company, founded and owned Grasslands Nursery, holds a B.A. in Professional Communication, and entered local government in 2014 when she was elected to Summerland Council.

During this 4-year period, she also sat as a director on the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen (RDOS) board. The focus of this conversation will centre on being a woman of colour in government during such a politically-divisive and racially-charged time in modern history.

Wednesday, August 5 – Qusic, 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm, presented by Rebellious Unicorns and Unicorns.live, featuring Brandon Schmor, hosted by Friends of Dorothy Lounge ~ Kelowna and Online

Brandon Schmor (he/him/his) is a 25 year old self-taught pianist and vocalist from Vernon BC, who enjoys performing both covers, and his own original songs, spanning a wide range of musical genres including Blues, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Soul, Punk, Grunge, and even Ragtime Saloon Piano.

Around the age of 3, he began to pick out the notes from songs he had heard, on an old toy piano that was given to him. He continued to be fascinated with music, and pianos, eventually prompting his family to bring home a large antique upright piano for him to play on.

Brandon finally gained the confidence to come out as gay to his family in 2017, and was fortunate to receive acceptance, and support. Brandon is also diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, does not read sheet music, and plays piano entirely by ear, and emotion.

Content Rating: PG – Parental guidance is suggested for designated age range (7-13 yrs); some material may not be suitable for all children due to coarse language.

About QUSIC
QUSIC is a new LGBT2Q+ Artist Music Series, produced by Rebellious Unicorns Production Company Inc., in which all presenting artists must identify under the LGBT2Q+ spectrum. This innovative series celebrates the LGBTQ2+ community, which includes individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-spirit as well as a range of other gender and sexual identities. QUSIC will feature solo performers, duos or group acts, provided that the headlining artist identifies as LGBT2Q+.

QUSIC supports the growth and development of the Canadian music industry, highlighting artists who identify as LGBT2Q+. The music series invests in Canadian talent and will help to grow awareness of LGBT2Q+ musical artists, and helping to put money in their pockets so that they may continue to create this essential art form.

PURCHASING TICKETS
Due to Covid-19 we are only selling tickets by the table. This helps ensure appropriate social distancing based on requirements by provincial and local health authorities. Tickets are sold individually by table and each table has a range of tickets available. You must purchase within the range.
For Example: Table 2 (2-3ppl) this means you will have to purchase 2 or 3 tickets. The system will not let you proceed without selecting the appropriate number of seats.

-5:30pm – Doors open for pre-cocktails and food purchases
-6:55pm – Doors locked (no entry till after 7:15pm)
-7:00pm – Interview
-7:15pm – Live Performance (set 1)
-7:45pm – Intermission
-7:55pm – Live Performance (set 2)

NOTE: This show will be live-streamed, and we need all guests indoors and seated prior to broadcast. Doors will be locked at 6:55pm. Details will be posted on the door on how to gain access if you are late. No entry between 6:55pm and 7:15pm. Guests are asked to be mindful that they are attending a live broadcast. As there will be video cameras and microphones around the venue, you may be captured on camera and mic. There is no way to avoid this and we cannot edit anything out. Thank you for understanding.

QueeReads, your portal to LGBTQ2+ storytime for adults, featuring novella-length fiction reads ranging from QueeRomance to Queer Sci-Fi and Fantasy, read aloud by beautifully talented Queer people from the Okanagan. This is the final episode of this particular book.

Ashley Weis (she/they/them), who performs as Biawanna, joins Jessica Samuels for Episode 2. Ash/Biawanna identifies as queer/non-binary and is a proud WOC (Woman of Colour) Indigeneous Fijian/Soloman.

They are a dynamic singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who’s worked on multiple projects in different genres since they found their start at the age of seven. Their blend of indie-pop, RNB & dance-pop creates an energy that’s equal parts smart, sexy, and fierce.

They channel a certain strength through their namesake, Biawanna, matriarch of the Solomon Islands, who gave birth to a long line of chiefs that they are a descendent of. Biawanna is currently getting ready to release their debut EP, ‘Care’, which should be expected soon.

They will appear on Unicorns.LIVE’s Qusic.live as musical guest on Wednesday, July 22, 2020.

Saturday, July 25 – SA Pride Project: LGBTQ Flags and Pronouns Workshop, 12:00 pm – 9:00 pm, presented by Salmon Arm Arts Centre ~ Salmon Arm

This fall, the Salmon Arm Arts Centre is partnering with local Pride groups and First United to present an inaugural 4-day festival celebrating the LGBTQ2S+ community through the arts. Everyone is welcome to learn more about ourselves, family members and friends who identify as LGBTQ2S+, and to seek connection and creativity through the exhibition and online activities throughout the festival happening October 14-18, 2020.

Part of the festival includes an exciting PRIDE art exhibition! The Salmon Arm Art Gallery will feature mixed media artwork, including fifteen PRIDE flags and the associated pronouns.

We’re offering a FREE workshop for local LGBTQ2S+ artists to gather in a safe space to create flags on 16×20” canvasses. All supplies are included, but there is limited space. Pre-register by email curator@salmonarmartscentre.ca
