Kelowna.LGBT Newsletter – July 2020

Summer 2020

Summer is here! The sun is shining and we are excited to get back to some socially-distanced activities.

Voices Unheard

Tuesdays • 5:00pm

Kelowna Pride Society and Unicorns.LIVE are delighted to be partnering on Voices Unheard, a weekly livestream series with the intent of  bringing awareness to underrepresented members of society, which includes people of various racial backgrounds, sexuality, gender identity/expression, age, or ability.

Host Jessica Samuels will engage a different guest each week in a candid conversation about the challenges they have faced or continue to struggle with, elevating their voice and helping them to tell their stories.

Voices Unheard airs live every Tuesday at 5:00 pm on Unicorns.LIVE, with episodes available to stream after the original broadcast.

Those interested in being featured/interviewed are encouraged to complete this form.

Those who wish to watch the series will need to register for Unicorns.LIVE and can do so here. Those who sign up in July will get a 14-Day free trial and the first 100 subscribers will lock in a lifetime rate of $4.99 per month (regularly $8.99).

As this is a brand new series, there are some spots available for sponsorship and promotion. If you would like to learn more about advertising and supporting Voices Unheard, please email Kris Johnson

QUSIC with Matthew Presidente feat. Pedwell

July 8th – 7:00pm

QUSIC is thrilled to welcome back Matthew Presidente feat. Pedwell. Matty played the QUSIC pre-launch show back in February at Peak Pride Sun Peaks and has been a great support of the Series.

Tickets to the in-person show are sold out! The live stream will only be available at Watch.Unicorns.Live.

About the Artist
Rock/pop pianist/singer/songwriter Matthew Presidente (he/him/his) has been a part of the music scene in Vancouver for nearly 20 years. Independently recording and releasing 6 full length albums, he has been involved in a wide range of musical collaborations and performances. A local Metro Vancouver resident, Matthew was raised in Tsawwassen, where he began playing piano at 10 years old. Since then he has gone on to master guitar and percussion, but considers himself a piano player by trade. Referred to as “one of — if not — the best singer/songwriters our LGBT scene has” by Xtra Magazine (Vancouver), Matty has been on the music scene for nearly 20 years, and has performed in rosters among headliners such as Ace of Base and Dragonette.

Bradley Pedwell (he/him/his) is a singer/songwriter from Vancouver BC that mixes rock, folk, and hip-hop to create a captivating blend of acoustic rock. Pedwell’s heavy 90s influence combined with his passionate rock vocal often results in comparison to artists like Everlast and Matchbox 20 – whilst Pedwell agrees, he insists his sound is “Definitively-Vancouver”.
Born and raised in Vancouver, Bradley has been performing for 17 years as a singer/songwriter and has released 9 albums independently. In the last year, Pedwell has performed over 160 dates and released 1 EP per month written/recorded/produced entirely himself.

SOS Pride – March 2020 Newsletter

Here’s what’s happening in March

Thank you to everyone who attended our February social at Cue’s! It was a blast and we had lots of new faces and even new friends from Kelowna.LGBT come and participate!

We are also so thrilled at the community turnout to the Out in Schools event at Cleland Theatre on March 5 – over 100 community members and youth were in attendance!  The presentation was also at all of the middle schools and high schools this week within School District 67.  Representation and having LGBTQ2+ stories told is so vital to moving progress forward for the next generation.  Thank you to Melisa Edgerly for leading this community initiative!

Our apologies for getting our March newsletter out a bit late this month…this week is jam-packed with events all week long, check them out!

Pride Week 2020 Dates Announced For Kelowna

Put These Dates in Your Calendar Today! 🌈

We’re delighted to announce the key dates for Kelowna’s 2020 Pride celebrations. Kelowna’s Pride Week will run from Saturday, June 6, 2020, to Sunday, June 14, 2020 – please save the dates now!

2019 was our biggest Pride ever, with over 12,000 people joining us for the Pride March in downtown Kelowna! It was incredible to see the outpouring of support from the local community. Our challenge for 2020 is to try and make Pride even bigger and better and we need your help to make that happen.

The month of June marks the internationally recognized Pride Month; in commemoration of the pivotal 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City and it is also the month Gilbert Baker’s original design of the Rainbow Pride Flag was flown at the 1978 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. Pride Month is a month-long inclusive celebration of the LGBTQ2+ community and an opportunity to reflect and consider the progress still to be made in the search for equality. There will be a wide range of events taking place across Kelowna, including a Pride March and Festival downtown.

A scene from 2019’s Pride March in Kelowna – over 10,000 people participated.

Keep an eye on this newsletter, our websiteFacebook and Instagram for more details in the weeks and months ahead.

Thank you in advance for helping to make Kelowna’s 2020 Pride celebrations a huge success and for showing that no matter your gender expression or sexual orientation, all are welcome here in Kelowna.

We look forward to seeing you at Kelowna’s 2020 Pride festivities! Kelowna’s Pride celebrations are presented by TD. Thanks, TD!

Volunteers, Sponsors, Vendors and Advertisers Needed!

We need your help! We’re in search of vendors who would like to exhibit at our Pride Festival, great volunteers who are willing to help out during Pride – there’s everything from taking tickets to snapping photos – and we’re also looking to secure advertisers and sponsors for our Pride Guide which will be published in the lead up to Kelowna Pride 2020.

Would-be vendors are encouraged to complete this form. Meanwhile, those who would like to advertise in the Kelowna Pride Society’s Pride Guide should complete this form, and those looking to run an ‘Affiliate Event’ in conjunction with Pride Week 2020 should fill out this form. Those who would like to volunteer or sponsor Kelowna Pride’s 2020 celebrations should email dustyn@kelownapride.com.

Thank you so much!
