There Are Still 70 Countries Where it’s Illegal to be Gay

Homosexuality has been declassified as a disease for over 30 years

The map is part of a report about the legal status of being LGBT+ around the globe. The ILGA State-Sponsored Homophobia Report, released in December 2019and updated for IDAHOBIT 2020.

The report shows that despite the rhetoric that “it’s getting easier to be LGBT+”–staggering parts of the world remain without fundamental rights in employment, marriage, adoption and the prevention of crimes.

Petition Seeks to Eliminate Restrictions on Blood Donation

Petition seeks to eliminate restrictions on blood donations by gay men and transgender women.

New Democrat MP Randall Garrison of B.C. authorized the publication of the electronic petition on the website of the House of Commons.

The petition argues there is “no science” behind the three-month deferral.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights Rife with Systemic Racism, Sexism, Homophobia

A review was ordered in June following a social media campaign where Black, Indigenous and LGBTQ2 current and former employees shared stories of racism, discrimination and censorship at the museum.

An independent review into reports of workplace discrimination at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights has found “pervasive and systemic” racism at the national museum in Winnipeg, and says the museum is rife with sexism, heterosexism and homophobia.

Police Investigate Three Hate-Motivated Incidents Against LGBT2Q+ Calgarians

Calgary police are investigating three recent incidents believed to be hate-motivated.

The first was an alleged attack on a man near the intersection of 17th Avenue and 12th Street S.W. around midday on July 31.

Another incident saw a drag king being spat on by a man walking past. And during a third incident, a same-sex couple was assaulted by two men on Scooters who used rocks, a belt, and a recycling bin as weapons.

‘It is unacceptable that this is happening and we will absolutely investigate anytime a crime is motivated by hate or bias’

Woman sent vile letter calling LGBTQ+ people “sick” after flying rainbow flag

The sender says she’s lived in the area for fifty years and called LGBT2Q+ people “sick”.

Jessica Hanks, a Canadian woman living in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, has received a homophobic letter after winning a grand prize for decoration. As part of her garden design, she flew the rainbow flag, to support her gay child, and this is what earned the letter sender’s disgust.
