Proudly Designing with the LGBT2QIA+ Community in Mind
Pride to me always means more than a yearly celebration, to me, it means having a safe space for connection to a supportive, resilient, and vibrant community. By designing these few pieces of apparel with a local social enterprise, we are able to show what the words LOVE and ALLY really mean.
I made a connection with Rebecca and Michael of You Are Collective during a business program. I was drawn to their candor and authentic approach to social enterprise, and their honest commitment to improving the conversations and access to resources surrounding mental health issues.
We ended up discussing the ways in which we might be able to join forces to shed light on the importance of adequate mental health support systems for the LGBTQ2IA+ community and what it means to be an ally.
From there we came up with an idea to collaborate on an apparel collection to launch before Pride that helps address both.
The You Are Collective has been such a great group to collaborate with on such a project. Their willingness to allow me to be as creative as I wanted and take the lead in design was refreshing. Their open-mindedness and support as allies is exemplary as well. There were so many designs and concepts that we could’ve opened an entirely new shop! However, we decided to do a small collection with the opportunity for more in the future.
Choosing to design pride-themed apparel with a portion of proceeds going to the Etcetera Youth Group here in Kelowna was the perfect collaboration project for us. While this project is a small departure from their #1Million campaign to fund one million counselling sessions across Canada, it was no less important to them to do something that meant a great deal to all of us and helped to make an impact in the local LGBTQ2IA+ community.
The result is a small apparel collection that everyone can be proud to wear while showing their allyship and love ready for pre-order just in time for Pride month.
T-shirts, stickers, and ball caps with unique Pride-themed designs will be available for purchase through You Are Collective online starting April 24th.
