WE Care Etcetera Youth Donation (Media Release)

Partnership Will Support Local LGBT2Q+ Youth

Monday, February 18 – Kelowna – On behalf of The mx, Kelowna’s only LGBT2Q+ networking event, and the December, We Care – Drag Show Fundraiser, Rebellious Unicorns Productions Company Inc. is proud to announce a donation of  $1441.10 to Etcetera Youth Group (Etcetera) our local LGBT2Q+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, +)  youth group. Etcetera runs two facilitated programs: a weekly youth support group and  a monthly allied adult group that offers a safe space for parents, caregivers and caring adults to meet peers, ask questions, and experience support. The name “Etcetera” reflects the diversity of the youth who participate in the program, including those whose identities are more varied and expansive than what could ever be described in an acronym.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide local rainbow youth with the funds to create safe, inclusive spaces in our community.” Says Dustyn Baulkham, CEO and Executive Producer of Rebellious Unicorns Production Company Inc. “Growing up in a rural community there was rarely a space where I felt I could be myself, safely. I am personally committed to seeing this group thrive to support future generations.”  To see this through, Baulkham has ensured that all future ticket sales from The mx will be donated directly to Etcetera to help ensure sustainability of the program.

“We are genuinely lucky to have such an amazing advocate championing us in our community” says Adrián Pérez Ara, current Etcetera facilitator from The Bridge Youth & Family Services, the interim parent organization of Etcetera. Local community organizations: Kelowna Pride Society, TransParent Okanagan, Senior Gay Men in Kelowna, Living Positive Resource Center, Okanagan Boys and Girls Club, Foundry Kelowna, CMHA Kelowna, Men’s Health Initiative, 9Rising, and The Bridge Youth & Family Services have created an advisory committee to develop and maintain a sustainability plan for Etcetera. The advisory committee is actively recruiting youth representatives for committee membership. “The outpouring of support from our community’s organizations has been nothing short of inspiring” says Michele Hopkins, Acting Executive Director of The Bridge.
