Unicorns.LIVE Virtual Drag Bingo: Win over $1000 Jackpot in Prizes!

What a whirlwind Pride Month 2020 has been! We continue to manage a number of challenges in our daily lives on Planet Earth: the ongoing COVID pandemic has affected us all to varying degrees, and the injustices perpetuated on racialized persons, people of colour, transgender people, and all LGBT2Q+ people remain at the forefront. Mother Nature also decided to throw in some wild weather this June, for good measure…

At Rebellious Unicorns, we’ve been very busy launching our new streaming platform, Unicorns.LIVE, which has presented a welcome and positive distraction in a world that can sometimes feel disconnected and dark. Pride Month has felt terribly strange for many of us who are accustomed to coming together to celebrate. With this in mind, Rebellious Unicorns Production Company Inc. is closing out the month with a flourish of colour and frivolity with Unicorns.LIVE Virtual Drag Bingo on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

Virtual Drag Bingo airs live on Unicorns.LIVE on June 30 at 7:00 pm (PST), and live streamed on the Unicorns.LIVE Facebook page. This fabulous and FREE event will be hosted at Friends of Dorothy Lounge in Downtown Kelowna by two of our favourite Queens: the sensational and shimmering Sparkle, and Kelowna’s Sweetheart Ella Lamoureux

That’s right — you can attend and play in person at Friends of Dorothy OR you can play online! Your hostesses will guide you through a veritable wonderland of numbers and nonsense, replete with prizes and Pride!

Pride Week 2020 Dates Announced For Kelowna

Put These Dates in Your Calendar Today! 🌈

We’re delighted to announce the key dates for Kelowna’s 2020 Pride celebrations. Kelowna’s Pride Week will run from Saturday, June 6, 2020, to Sunday, June 14, 2020 – please save the dates now!

2019 was our biggest Pride ever, with over 12,000 people joining us for the Pride March in downtown Kelowna! It was incredible to see the outpouring of support from the local community. Our challenge for 2020 is to try and make Pride even bigger and better and we need your help to make that happen.

The month of June marks the internationally recognized Pride Month; in commemoration of the pivotal 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City and it is also the month Gilbert Baker’s original design of the Rainbow Pride Flag was flown at the 1978 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. Pride Month is a month-long inclusive celebration of the LGBTQ2+ community and an opportunity to reflect and consider the progress still to be made in the search for equality. There will be a wide range of events taking place across Kelowna, including a Pride March and Festival downtown.

A scene from 2019’s Pride March in Kelowna – over 10,000 people participated.

Keep an eye on this newsletter, our websiteFacebook and Instagram for more details in the weeks and months ahead.

Thank you in advance for helping to make Kelowna’s 2020 Pride celebrations a huge success and for showing that no matter your gender expression or sexual orientation, all are welcome here in Kelowna.

We look forward to seeing you at Kelowna’s 2020 Pride festivities! Kelowna’s Pride celebrations are presented by TD. Thanks, TD!

Volunteers, Sponsors, Vendors and Advertisers Needed!

We need your help! We’re in search of vendors who would like to exhibit at our Pride Festival, great volunteers who are willing to help out during Pride – there’s everything from taking tickets to snapping photos – and we’re also looking to secure advertisers and sponsors for our Pride Guide which will be published in the lead up to Kelowna Pride 2020.

Would-be vendors are encouraged to complete this form. Meanwhile, those who would like to advertise in the Kelowna Pride Society’s Pride Guide should complete this form, and those looking to run an ‘Affiliate Event’ in conjunction with Pride Week 2020 should fill out this form. Those who would like to volunteer or sponsor Kelowna Pride’s 2020 celebrations should email dustyn@kelownapride.com.

Thank you so much!

Kelowna’s Out in the Valley by immrfabulous.com

Prides aren’t always sunshine and lollipops, sometimes they’re sugarplum and winepops!

This was definitely the case last week when I was invited to attended the inaugural ‘Out in the Valley’, a unique LGBTQ holiday adventure in picturesque Kelowna.

4 years ago, after approving the city’s first rainbow crosswalk, Mayor Basran was referred to by someone as ‘Mayor Sugarplum’.

ADD THESE KELOWNA LGBT2Q+ FALL EVENTS TO YOUR CALENDAR

The pumpkin spice lattes are out in full force, the trees are varying shades of autumnal colours, and the weather is cooling down, but things are still smoking hot for Kelowna’s LGBT2Q+ community.

As you may have heard, Kelowna Pride recently announced a brand new queer wine festival, set to launch this fall. OUT in the Valley will be the first event of its kind in the country. In addition to that exciting news, there are even more reasons to feel gourd (get it?) about fall in Kelowna.

Kelowna to Host Biggest Pride Celebration Ever!

For Immediate Release
June 13, 2019

(Kelowna, BC) June marks the internationally recognized Pride Month – an inclusive celebration of the LGBTQ2+ community and an opportunity to consider the progress still to be made in the quest for equality. Kelowna will host its own celebrations predominantly over the course of June 15 – 22, 2019.

This year, the Kelowna Pride Society is planning its most substantial celebration ever in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The Kelowna Pride Festival is moving back to City Park which will allow for a longer Pride March and bigger festival area for our community partners and festival attendees.

Dustyn Baulkham, General Manager of the Kelowna Pride Society, hopes Kelowna will get behind the celebration:

“We encourage the entire community to join us in this celebration. A more inclusive Kelowna is a better Kelowna. This isn’t about ‘us versus them’, Pride is a chance to show that no matter your gender expression or sexual orientation, all are welcome here in this city. At its heart, Pride is inclusive, welcoming, open and a giant celebration! What’s not to love about that?”

The Stonewall riots was community action against police brutality toward the LGBTQ2+ community and is widely recognized as ignition of the modern LGBTQ2+ rights movement. The theme for Kelowna’s 2019 Pride celebrations is “Because of You.” Blake Edwards, Co-President of the Kelowna Pride Society, explains the reasoning behind the theme:

“As members of the LGBTQ2+ community, every right we enjoy today was fought for and we must not forget those who risked their lives for those rights. Without their sacrifice, we wouldn’t have most of the freedoms that we enjoy today. For the Kelowna Pride Society, ‘Because of You’ is a way to honour those that fought against police brutality, discrimination, harassment and repressive laws – whether that be Stonewall and Operation Soap or creating the Rainbow Coalition and fighting for the right to have Pride here in Kelowna.”

There are a host of activities, including official Kelowna Pride events and affiliate community partner events, family-friendly fun and 19+ parties, taking place during Pride. Allies are encouraged and welcome to attend all of the events. Some of the key dates are:
